A physician’s disability claim story

Dr. Rosen is a surgeon client living in the Midwest. She was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness in 2011 and was out of work for over two years. Now back at work full time, she wanted to share what specialty occupation coverage meant in a real situation

The conversation:
Did you ever think you would get disabled?

A: No. I was actually considering canceling my policy at the next renewal.

What is the biggest benefit of working with a disability specialist?

A: Policies have many riders and it’s hard to anticipate what you’ll need. Without Billy walking me through options, I wouldn’t have understood the details that made a difference.

Looking back, what would you do differently?

A: I would have chosen a higher monthly benefit. I picked the minimum because I didn’t think I’d ever need it. If you end up needing disability, you may also have significant unexpected expenses.

Did your expenses go down, stay the same, or increase during your claim?

A: They increased. No matter how good your health insurance is, there can be significant uncovered bills and extra costs.

Why did you increase coverage later using a benefit increase option?

A: I was surprised I could increase my benefit even after getting sick. It was a relief to have a stronger monthly benefit if something happens again.

Does it matter that you live in a different city?

A: Not at all. Billy is prompt returning calls and emails, and the company chosen for my policy was easy to work with.

How did support help during the claim process?

A: It helped to have someone explain what the company needed and guide me through the steps when I was overwhelmed.

What would you say to the physician who thinks, “I’ll never get disabled”?

A: Maybe they’re right, but we all see unexpected, catastrophic events. The year I became disabled, two other young physicians in our group also had catastrophic disabilities. A life-changing event is hard enough without worrying about every bill. And once you become disabled, obtaining new disability insurance can be difficult or expensive. If the worst happens, you’re protected. If it doesn’t, you were one of the lucky ones.
